This transition is particularly evident in the United States pharmaceutical supply chain.

Operating within the pharmaceutical supply chain requires navigating a highly fragmented regulatory environment across more than fifty individual state boards of pharmacy and health departments. Manufacturers, wholesale distributors, third-party logistics providers, and pharmacies must maintain active licensure across each facility in which they operate.
